The title comes from the poem The Merry-go-round by Rainer Maria Rilke. For many years now Forrest's Gallopers has been a feature of Blackheath's Easter funfair and Rochester Sweep's Festival. It's a gorgeous traditional Victorian fairground ride. I'm fascinated by the change that takes place as night descends. The smiley sunshiny faces of children become dark and shadowy figures. Light against dark switches to dark against light. At night, the horses take centre stage.
