Artist's description:

This art piece was awarded the "Staff Pick" award at the 2015, Art of Monterey 12"x12" invitational. It was also exhibited in the Nature and Wildlife Exhibit: The St. Augustine Art Association

For me, inspiration comes from many places -- the natural world, archaeology, history, science, even cartoons. I love the idea of telling a story in one image.

I also love pretty and shiny, shiny. Sometimes I just want to create something that’s beautiful without any other layering of ideas or meaning. Maple leaves in autumn are a traditional and beautiful decorative element across cultures. I also love gilding – the art of applying metal leaf as a decorative element. All of these elements came together in “Be Leaf I.” The title is a play on words, referring to both the maple leaves and the copper and variegated metal leaf used to give the images their shimmer.

"Be Leaf I" is the right panel of a diptych; the left panel is "Be Leaf II." This piece is finished on the sides so it can be hung unframed.

Materials used:

metallic plaster, metallic paint, copper leaf, glaze
