A still-life painting inspired by the work of Richard Diebenkorn. The paint is handled quite loosely in this picture and a section of the canvas is left totally bare (top left corner), although in spite of this, because of the play of light and the dark shadows on the plate the overall effect is highly realistic.
I recently saw the RA exhibition of Diebenkorn's work and loved the free and confident way he uses paint - I thought I would choose a similar subject and try and approach it in the same way. I like the restrained colours of this picture and the simplicity of the composition.
Painted with Michael Harding Oil Colours on 100% natural linen covered board.
