◾Aurelia de Sousa (Chile 1866 – Portugal 1922).
In the Imaginary Museum of Portuguese painting of the second half of the nineteenth century, Aurelia de Sousa is making a important presence.
The work of Aurelia de Sousa is a"silent narrative records of the house: the presence of the old mother, the work of women and children, (…) the country roads or river views. Makes a strong painting, rarely volumetric analysis detained in the shadows to capture the light in them "
Her work indicates influence of the most innovative painting styles of her time. She painted in a naturalistic style very personal, sometimes with realistic influences, Impressionist and Post-Impressionists.
Her subjects included portraits, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life. She is most famous for her “Self-Portrait”, painted in 1900.
Aurélia had poor health, and died at her home in Quinta da China, May 26, 1922, at the age of 55.
