Artist's description:

oil on canvas
30 x 30 cm, framed 34 x 34 cm

My oil paintings can be best described as a reinterpretation of the portraiture tradition with an emphasis on emotional conflict and expression.
Using photographs of images as sources, I explore the nature of, and our relationship with, representation; particularly with regard to human expression and communication.
The heavily cropped, close-up compositions, enhanced by colour and mark-making, and the use of dialogue for titles, are intended to affect our emotional response and prompt a personal empathy with the characters portrayed. The painted surface draws attention to the process involved and to the choices made in transforming the photographic source image.
