Artist's description:

Indian mythology has played with gender in many ways. Amba is such a character from the epic Mahabharata, whose gender goes through transformation from female to male. She is like the two spirits of American Indian tribes. In this small portrait, I have explored gender ambiguity by mixing up characteristics attributed to both the masculine and feminine in one person. This portrait reflects the desires of a person who has crossed the borders of gender norms and performance. A man and a woman in one, or neither!
