Artist's description:

This semi-abstract painting is part of my 7artwork series about the verses of my favorite gospel song, Amazing Grace. This song, that is so special to me, will be part of my Christian Collection . This painting represents the second verse.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

For those of you who do not know the history or the song, I will post a short note about the history of the songs composer and the lyrics of the song.

Amazing Grace was written by an Englishman who in the early part of his life was an outspoken atheist, libertine, and slave trader. John Newton was born in London in 1725, the son of a Puritan mother and a stern ship commander father who took him to sea when he was 11. By 1745, Newton was enlisted in the slave trade, running captured slaves from Africa to, ironically, Charleston, S.C. After he rode out a storm at sea in 1748, he found his faith. He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1764 and became an important voice in the English abolitionist movement. At that time he wrote the autobiographical Amazing Grace, along with 280 other hymns.

His history is somewhat debatable, but I feel he was influenced by the songs he heard sung in the hold of the slave ship by the enslaved. That is why the most important part of this painting are the slaves represented by the window slats in the side of the ship. Those are not cannons, but the heads of the slaves looking out to freedom. I do not put forward that Newton was a good man. It is not me to judge, God will do that. This series only honors the songs of the slaves that were treated heinously by society and inspired a wicked and evil man to find God.

The verses of the song AMAZING GRACE

1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

2. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

3. Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

5. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

7. When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
