Artist's description:

This is a representation of the myth of Alcyone, whose name has been interpreted to mean "The Queen Who Wards Off Evil". She was the daughter of Atlas and gives her name to a star in the Pleiades cluster in the constellation of Taurus, and also to the "Halcyon" bird (kingfisher). I have chosen to use the motif of the kingfisher because, not only is it beautiful, it represents many things to many cultures -it can be a guardian of rivers, a symbol of renewal and fertility and a symbol of peace (-the expression "Halcyon days" derives from the belief in ancient Greece that the bird laid it's eggs during the period of 7 days either side of the winter solstice, when the Mediterranean Sea was comparatively calm). The Kingfisher features in the mythology of cultures around the world.
