Artist's description:

These works are made in direct response to my current limitations on making and transporting work whilst travelling light in Asia. Keep it small, keep it light! But also, they will finally give me the opportunity to put into practise an idea I have been thinking about for a while now.

For some time I have been making work that uses repetition, multiples and patterning as a translator for ideas that I am interested in..archetypes, the collective consciousness, macrocosms, microcosms, fractals, geometry, alchemy and various other theories in science, theology, symbols, myths and philosophies that discuss synchronicity, connections, similarities, cause and effect and the intertwining and enfolding within these disciplines.

These ideas are visible everywhere in the natural world in the form of patterns and repetitions...in space, on earth and under the waters. A well known example is the Archimedean spiral which manifests everywhere in botany, geology, physics, cellular biology, fractal geometry, chemistry, cosmology, mathematics, weather and on and on.

The similarities between an image of a nebula, a cell, a flower, a fractal, a raindrop, gives me a motif, a symbol, a signifier, a switch, that turns the work into whatever the viewer is open to see. Physically destroying (?) transforming a completed work into many parts of itself translates these ideas perfectly for me as the work is reborn, recycled, redeemed and evolved into a new thing(s)

In these drawings, I am using the well known repetitive 'ABRACADABRA' as a framework for my ideas. The placing of the blue eye in the centre is an homage to the roots of the word. i continue with my circular, spherical, ovoid motif but contain it, trap it, within a square.

Very briefly, Abracadabra is an incantation used as a magic word in stage magic tricks, and historically was believed to have healing powers when inscribed on an amulet. The word may have its origin in the Aramaic language, but numerous conflicting folk etymologies are associated with it.

'The word Abracadabra may derive from an Aramaic phrase meaning "I create as I speak." This etymology is dubious, however, as אברא כדברא in Aramaic is more reasonably translated "I create like the word." In the Hebrew language, the phrase translates more accurately as "it came to pass as it was spoken." All of these are good for what I want to do. To make a work in parts into a whole, to manifest, to create, to grow, evolve. To read more abut this interesting 'incantation' and it's history see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abracadabra#History'

There are 67 letters in the traditional amulet presentation ( see image). When I have completed all images to the same scale 67 times, I will have a work that will measure apx 2.5 meters high and 2.5 across the base ( depending on aspect). I really like the idea that this work will exist in its finished form eventually only as a digital manipulation (From copies of the originals) but in it's parts, as a global piece, it will be reaching and connecting with as many people and parts of the world as possible.

The added human element of sending these individual works out from the studio wall into many different lives excites me further. From the initial thought, the idea, the thing itself is spored into the world, affecting change. The work is taken apart but is still whole in a metaphysical way. Many eyes see different parts it at the same time from many different perspectives, the work truly does become multi dimensional, multi cultural. Solve et Coagula indeed.

There is also the fact that in making the works smaller they become more affordable to more people which dissipates the work even more. Just to make it a little more interesting on certain works, I will upload the finished drawing with each part uploaded and as time passes I will mark out the parts that have been claimed. But ABRACADABRA will grow a work at a time.

Each work will be numbered and signed on the back. eventually a print will be available of the finished work.

All works will be shipped in a reinforced envelope from Asia using the most secure and efficient method available.

Please note that for clarity, I have for the time being, described my main practice as Drawing because ALL of my other work, (paintings, sculptures, eggshells, prints etc) made previous to travelling is no longer showing on this site whilst I am travelling. These works can be found on my website at: www.sandlaurenson.com along with a more general Artist Statement and Bio.
