The prickly pear (Lat. Opuntia ficus-indica) is a widespread cactus species along the Croatian coast. Its profuse bright yellow flowers attract local insects, while the prickly leaves are best avoided, except as photographic attractions. In Australia, the prickly pear is considered a "pest" as an introduced species; however, where it remains undiscovered, it can reach gigantic proportions. In Dalmatia, it offers a welcome summer colour to the greyish rocks and stunted vegetation.
