A Mother Elephant is giving a cuddle to her elephant cub. This is a close-up portrait of their faces. I made this print for my youngest daughter when she was 3. She loved wild animals, was a big fan of Planet Earth, and I thought it would be a nice and reassuring image to put in her bedroom.
It took me such a long time to make the plate for this print! I used almost all possible techniques to etch it: soft ground (to get the texture of the elephant skin), hard ground (lines), soft ground again (shadows), and Aquatint. I thought I would print 40, but I don't think the plate will last that long, and it would be almost impossible to make it again, and for it to look the same way. I currently only have two prints in stock, it has been quite successful.
In the photo it is framed in black, but it looks much nicer framed in white or with a white-washed wood. It fits nicely in a standard 40cmx50cm frame.
