This is a project I’ve been thinking about and working on for some time. A series of paintings inspired by Japanese Edo Period woodblock prints depicting Japanese life during the period 1603 – 1868. A time when Japan was effectively cut off from western influences and western visitors to Japan were strictly monitored and almost all trade with foreigners banned. It’s a period I’m fascinated with and I have studied for many years whilst handling Japanese artifacts, antiques and artworks (including the woodblock prints) from this time.
