Original artwork description:

This portrait of a man was created in 2007 and is one of a few studies for a larger self portrait piece I worked on for the 2008 BP Portrait Prize entry I submitted.

The painting is an example of my expressionist mark-making using a limited pallet of colours, candles for lighting - exploring simplicity, minimalism and examining identity through self-portraiture.

During the making of this image I could see elements of my granddads, Dad and the many generations before my birth who has contributed to my genetic make-up and the way I am biologically formed.

Materials used:

Oil on Canvas
