About Scott McLachlan
Biography
I’m a Scotland-based artist with a background in industrial design and computer graphics animation. Over time, painting has become a way for me to explore atmosphere, memories, characters and machines...and to create visual stories that unfold in light and shadow.
Much of my work centers on moments that feel half-remembered — a road after rain, a figure moving through mist, the soft glow of headlights in the distance. I’m drawn to the spaces between clarity and obscurity, where detail gives way to suggestion and the imagination takes over.
My process is slow and layered, allowing light, texture, and tone to find their balance. I’m influenced by Impressionism and contemporary figurative painting, but my focus is less on likeness and more on mood...on how a scene feels rather than how it looks.
In the end, I hope the paintings speak quietly, inviting the viewer to pause and find something of their own story within them. I like to think of them as open-ended narratives: the conclusion of the story belongs to the viewer :)
