About Sarah Rachael

  • Biography
As a recent graduate from Aberystwyth University with an MA in Fine Art, I continue to live and work in the small sea-side town of Aberystwyth.

I paint what fascinates me, so my paintings do vary in their theme. A continuing interest of mine is finding the balance between abstraction and the figurative. I work continually into a painting with layers of glazing and paint to create something that reflects the physical and mental layers that exist within us as human beings. This may also contribute to my choices in round paintings, taking away any harsh edges and 'cropping' that occur with standard canvas that I don't believe mirror my emotions or feelings effectively.

I take a lot of inspiration from nature, flowers, my own thoughts and feelings, as well as colour itself. I primarily use acrylic paint on canvas as I find this is an efficient and responsive way to get the paint down and work over and into. I revel in the joy and frustration to be found within painting, through gestural brushstrokes, spontaneous mark-making and of course, when the painting is complete.
