Biography
From the moment his folks gave him a camera in high school, Bob Hooper found his calling. His first roll of film was of his teenage girlfriend...topless.
It took several years to get there and on his way he worked as a graphic artist, art directed for a large printing company, photographed cows and pigs for Farmers Own Co-op and opened his own photo studio in Des Moines. But, it was his move from the mid-west to Las Vegas in 1966 that finally got him to his goal. He started at the Las Vegas News Bureau, there being no better place to learn his craft than photographing hotels, celebrities, production shows and cheesecake by the pool. After assisting a Playboy photographer on a Las Vegas assignment, Playboy called on Hooper to photograph inventor Bill Lear at the Harrah’s Auto Museum in Reno, and the rest is history.
While photographing Lear at the museum, Hooper came up with an idea for the perfect Playboy pictorial, “Sex and the Automobile”. The car/costume/sex extravaganza ran in their May 1973 issue and for more than a decade after, Hooper produced several themed pictorials for the magazine, including,”Sex in the Great Outdoors”, Ladies of Joy, Airline Stews, Sisters and Girls of Las Vegas, as well as one of the most popular Playmates in history, long haired beauty Debra Jo Fondren. By the time he moved on from the magazine he had won two Playboy Best Pictorial Awards and had garnered the most reader response for a pictorial in it’s history.
The early 80’s brought video home and Hooper saw “moving pictures” as another creative avenue to pursue. He formed Hooper Productions and started producing television commercials, music videos, and time-lapse films. While he admittedly made more money with commercial video pursuits, he considers himself a “girl shooter” and never stopped photographing women, whether for fashion, advertising or private collections. Today he is concentrating on a few book projects he’s never had time for….starring women, of course.
