  • Mixed media bluebell woodland - how they are done!

Who doesn't love a Bluebell wood? Almost half the world's Bluebells are found in the UK – they're relatively rare elsewhere. You could say they are unique. As they are so unique this film shows my own unique and expressive way of expressing the texture, colour and light in the Spring woodland. Just watch how the painting is created with Watercolour, Gouache and soft pastel combining detail and expression. Enjoy!

    The Devils Chimney!

Derwent commissioned this film - a wonderful way to show how Derwent tinted charcoal Paint pan Set is used in the field painting the landmark of 'The devils Chimney' on Cleeve Hill, Winchcombe near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Don't worry, you don't have to manoeuvre yourself half way down a cliff to create a dramatic painting except...in this case, I did, the film crew as well! The things we do for our art! Enjoy.

Spring light and shade with Derwent Inktense

I just love Derwent Inktense! Every painting I create with the media is exciting and a joy to create. My students love it too. Workshops and art holidays are a sell out. I'm not surprised - it's such a versatile and easy to use media! This film shows only a fraction of what is possible to create with the media both outdoors and in the studio (same painting) from initial marks to final completion. Further details of my art holidays visit my website.

Painting and drawing in The South Pennines

A film showing the beautiful locations in the South Pennines which inspire so many of my expressive drawings and paintings - even today. Connecting to 'place' is important. In this film I demonstrate why as I take you to the locations which inspired the expressive drawings of the South Pennines featured in my book 'Drawing Dramatic Landscapes'

Drawing on location for 'Drawing dramatic Landscapes' publication

Drawing on location for 'Drawing dramatic Landscapes' publication

Mixed media painting at Howarth (Bronte country) in West Yorkshire for another drawing featured in in my book 'Drawing Dramatic Landscapes' published by Search Press in May '21. The mixed media drawing I'm creating is of The Bronte parsonage Museum from an unusual view point - St Michael & All Angels Church, Haworth. The family are interred in the church vaults except Anne Bronte. She died of tuberculosis in Scarborough, North Yorkshire and is buried at St Mary’s Church in the seaside town. For the most part this is a graphic drawing and is very different from the free and expressive landscape drawings in the book. Having the skills to create a very exacting drawing such as this is only possible from years of training and experience as a graphic designer and illustrator which spanned over 30 years. The church and the parsonage are connected through the Bronte family history. It was important to find a way to connect both. I did just that in this mixed media drawing.

On location at Whitby for Search Press publication

On location at Whitby for Search Press publication

It took two solid days to create and complete the drawing of Whitby using charcoal media - the complexity of the buildings in scale, character and form were all different and needed lots of focus and commitment to get it right. Really worth it though! The drawing in different stages of completion was featured in my book 'Drawing Dramatic Landscapes' published by Search Press in May '21 - the first in the companies 'Innovative Artist' series.

Demonstrating for students at Rydal Hall in The Lake District

Demonstrating for students at Rydal Hall in The Lake District

Once a year (sometimes twice if the stars align), I teach art holidays at Rydal Hall in The Lake District near Ambleside. The weeks course always commits to outdoor drawing and painting. I'm demonstrating and teaching along the shoreline of the beautiful lake Rydal Water - a short walk from the magnificent historical and beautiful hall owned by the Diocese of Carlisle. The drawing I created that day was featured in my book 'Drawing Dramatic Landscapes' published by Search Press in may '21. I'm delighted to say the book is a best seller (see Amazon for the amazing comments).
