About Katherine Watkinson

  • Biography
I am a self-taught artist working from the Peak District, where I am inspired by the landscape around me. Being South African, I am drawn to wide open and spacious landscapes, as well as growing up with my mother pointing out the huge abundance of South African flora that has migrated throughout the world. One could probably recognise my background from the number of proteas that feature in my work!

As a creative, I am inspired by our beautiful planet Earth. Having a background in geology has influenced that massively, giving me an extra insight into the landscape that surrounds me. It has also allowed me to spend extended amounts of time in stunning areas such as the Scottish Highlands which feature heavily in my landscape work.

My artwork is a mix of floral still-lifes and landscapes. My main focus in these paintings is a running theme through all of my passions; to bring a feeling of movement to something we otherwise perceive as motionless. I picked this up in geology, where I can stand in a deep valley and imagine the great sheets of rock around me grinding their way past each other. The same can be said about plants, they all grow and change in an almost imperceptible way. I hope to represent that through the style of stroke, the medium, and how the image is built, layer by layer. I treat each petal as a work of itself, then blend the work together.
