    Meet Nora!

    Nora Pineda’s ceramics and stonework are reflections of her Mexican cultural roots, brought to life as “stories in the round” transformed and mutated by a fusion of colors and shapes, imbued with life force from their creator. Hand-building her sculptures with coil and drape techniques, Pineda fires them at a high temperature, after which she glazes her pieces and re-fires before finishing them with oils and acrylics. She says “cone” rather than temperature when describing her firing process, a reference to an innovative measurement of energy predating the pyrometer or the thermocouple. For Pineda, sculpting is a magical process, not a scientific one. In cooking, there are molecular gastronomists, creating flavored foams and cubed eggs. Pineda is more of a soul food chef, instilling her creations with love and flooding her viewers with a sense of nostalgia, comfort, and emotion that she hopes they will reciprocate. “My work speaks also to healing,” Pineda says. “Pieces are created to capture great depth of emotion, celebration, suffering, and cultural bonding.” Nora Pineda’s work is on display at Agora Gallery in New York.

The exhibition features Nora Pineda works as well as fourteen other internationally known artists who contend with the traditions of figuration and abstraction. These artists draw from the past to present fresh, contemporary perspectives on universal ideas.
