Starting to add Jesmonite to the armature of Grace and Truth

Starting to add Jesmonite to the armature of Grace and Truth

Having to work fast with jesmonite. Jesmonite is a sort of plaster which is mixed up with resin rather than water. It results in a very hard material which can be waterproofed and kept outside. Once dried it is extremely hard and difficult to sand down, electric tools are necessary for carving and smoothing it once set hard. I wear a dust mask as the powder is bad for the lungs and can be ingested when mixing. I find it exciting to use as the piece takes shape so quickly when working in this material.

Me beginning work on To Gaze and Wonder

Blocking out a stone sculpture - this takes the most time, getting rid of the squareness of the block - after this it goes quite fast as the figure inside begins to take shape. This sculpture is made from a block of Portland Stone.
