About Nathan Down

  • Biography

The grid is present in almost every aspect of modern day life. From the layout of our cities, to the pixelated structure on our mobile phones, we are confronted by visual information constructed by an infinite grid.

Grids portray a sense of order, a readymade construct to understand the bombardment of our ever-changing, fluid, image-based world and asks, does the grid act as a constraint or a liberation?

My work is an examination of the many forms the grid takes and our interpretations of the image in our cut and paste culture. Using paint and collage to simultaneously experience information and bridge media that flattens time and reaches out beyond what surrounds us.
