About Michael Hockmon

  • Biography

Michael Hockman was born in Sacramento, California in 1961.  The evolution of his painting began at age seventeen when he won awards in a high school art competition.  He finds inspiration in his love for music and history.

A quote from Michael… “My work is based on very preliminary approaches to Abstraction.  I add elements for days, even weeks, so that accidental characteristics complete each work.  My hope is that I might visually seduce the viewer”.

Travel has always been an important source for strategies in his work and Michael developed his fundamental processes and skills largely from the exposure it has brought him. The nuances in his sculpted intricate lines, the shapes he uses, and his ability to develop contours from various materials are some of the qualities in his work he attributes to his exposure while traveling.

Michael’s current abstracts are comprised of geometric shapes and rich natural colors. Interspersed with collage, they are reminiscent of vast natural landscapes.  Mixing various solid elements in order to create a quiet and contemplative mood, Hockman strikes a soothing balance in the proportions and tonality of his compositions.
