About Mia Hawk

  • Biography
My name is Mia Hawk and I’ve been a full time artist for the past 8 years.

I am primarily a painter and use a number of mediums; watercolour, oils, acrylics and pencil. My work ranges from basic sketches to large scale oil paintings that takes months to complete. The past 5-7 years (when I seriously started my practice) has seen a huge development, I started doing small illustrations that I printed on t shirts and posters and sold at markets and social media. I now sell paintings and art works at art fairs and to private collectors. A lot of paintings I sell before they are done; you won't find my work in many galleries!

I am compelled by myth, fairytales and general story telling, a love that I carried with me from working with classical plays and texts. These images are often realistic in style, depicting what could be the highlight or turning point of a myth or fairytale. They can often appear symbolic, and is meant as an invitation to the viewer to ask questions and make up their own stories around what might have happened to the characters in the painting.

Though I use many styles and mediums; I suppose there are a few things that unify my work; the use of odd and strong colours, attention to detail (making the style lean more towards realism) and a certain intensity in expression. I also experience life with a certain urgency. It is short, precious and simply magical. This is something I feel is reflect in my work generally.
