About Melanie Cambridge

  • Biography

I love to be painting outside “en plein air”, usually with oils and preferably near to water where my aim is to capture the light and atmosphere rather than every last detail. Favourite locations include the lovely English coastline. I often travel down to West Wittering and the Solent to paint beaches, boats estuary scenes.   Winter light can be particularly captivating, so I wrap up warm, grab my paints and brushes and get on with it!

Smaller works are usually produced outside on location whereas my larger seascapes are studio works, using my location sketches and photos for reference.

Artists who have inspired me over the years include Ken Howard, Trevor Chamberlain and Fred Cuming, all of whom are wonderful painters of light.
