About Melanie Cambridge

  • Biography

I love to be painting outside “en plein air”, usually with oils and preferably near to water where my aim is to capture the light and atmosphere rather than every last detail. Favourite locations include the lovely English coastline. I often travel down to West Wittering and the Solent to paint beaches, boats estuary scenes.  The River Thames and Wey are also favourites, where I paint from my narrowboat as an outdoor studio.  Most works are either started outside on location or produced in my studio using reference sketches and coloured studies rather than photographs.  Winter light can be particularly captivating, so I wrap up warm, grab my paints and brushes and get on with it!

Artists who have inspired me over the years include Ken Howard, Trevor Chamberlain and David Curtis, all of whom are wonderful painters of light.
