About MaryAnn Loo

  • Biography
As a child I was discouraged from becoming an artist, but in 2013, I curated my first solo show, and have since sold over 100 paintings and illustrated 3 children's books. My journey so far has shown that anything is possible, and dreams do come true.

I create mixed media paintings of penguins living in the clouds and flying across the sky, symbolizing a world of possibilities, freedom, love and the adventure of living out one's dreams.

Event: "Bricks and Clouds" - self-curated group exhibition

    Dates: April 25, 2014 - May 11, 2014

    Venue: Claire Loves Gallery, Singapore

MaryAnn's first group exhibition as curator and leading organizer. She gathered a group of 7 working professionals (who are also aspiring artists or art hobbyists) from a Meetup.com group based in Singapore, and led them to creating a theme for the show, finding a venue, raising money on Indiegogo, and developing their ideas for their artworks. She exhibited 3 paintings in this show.

"Bricks and Clouds" explores the dynamic between the practical and the aspirational aspects of life. Bricks are the foundation of a building, hence representing the practical (usually mundane) things like your job, paying your bills, having a roof over your head. Clouds represent one's dreams and desires, intangible things that we would like to have. Sometimes we are weighed down by the bricks and forget what it's like to live in the clouds, while sometimes we get stuck in the clouds and forget that the bricks are also important.

This exhibition was organized within 2 months - inclusive of finding a venue, creating the paintings, and marketing. During this time, MaryAnn also raised US$2,000 on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, and was interviewed on the local news in Singapore about her use of the website. She was also featured in a Reuters article (http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/18/us-singapore-dream-idUSBRE91H01J20130218)

During the week of her exhibition, MaryAnn sold 17 paintings to a total of 8 collectors.

Biography

As a child I was discouraged from becoming an artist, but in 2013, I curated my first solo show, and have since sold over 100 paintings and illustrated 3 children's books. My journey so far has shown that anything is possible, and dreams do come true.

I create mixed media paintings of penguins living in the clouds and flying across the sky, symbolizing a world of possibilities, freedom, love and the adventure of living out one's dreams.
