About Mary Beaney (Nee Reay)

  • Biography
I am a 'war baby', wife, mother, grandmother, and part-time artist in that order.  I've always dabbled in art but it was in 1987 that I took my art seriously and studied for a Fine Art Diploma as a very mature student.  During my studies I investigated various forms of media and settled, for the time-being, on the use of acrylics and mixed media on various surfaces. I won't bore you with my artistic journey but I have reached a plateau in my work so am now indulging in the use of victorian and vintage family photographs as part of my mixed media. My first love has always been portraiture in all its forms although I do attempt landscapes, still life etc.
The major element of my work is an attempt to create atmosphere - real and unreal - with the subtle use and blending of rich colour and  layers of texture,  aiming to balance a moment in time past and the contemporary of today.
During the last 25 years I have curated and promoted many exhibitions throughout east sussex and beyond.  Am owner of Art on the River Exhibitions (.uk), and co-founder of Chalk Gallery Lewes of which I no longer participate.
For the more discerning I tutored acrylic workshops 'Art in the Community' in the village hall for a number of years.
I have recently retired from the 'workplace' as I am now well past my sell-by-date so divide my time between making art and researching my family tree which at present dates back to the 1500's.
My work is held in collections throughout Europe, Australia, South Africa Canada and beyond.
