About Malcolm D B Munro

  • Biography
With a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Houston, and having studied at the McNay Institute in San Antonio and the University of the Witwatersrand, I am well versed in the history, theory and practice of the Fine Arts, and draw heavily upon that knowledge and background.

My work is informed by studies in philosophy, theatre, music and literature at universities in the various countries I have lived in. With the exception of music, I have taught all of these. I ran a theatre company for a number of years and have worked in many others as actor, designer of sets and and music, and producer.

Despite a fervent commitment to the modern and contemporary, there is a deep awareness of our historical and cultural heritage.

Influences are the art of the Twenties in Paris, Russia and Eastern Europe, of late Nineteenth century Vienna, and, particularly, the Modernist Movement in the United States of the Thirties and Forties. Among artists whom admire are Edvard Munch and Gustav Klimt. The music of John Cage has a strong influence on my work.

While I presently work in digital media, painting, drawing and sculpture are forms which I am exploring.

The intention in my work is to create a body of art which stimulates, challenges and speaks directly to the viewer.
