**KW307** Malayka Gormally’s figurative paintings combine linear simplicity reminiscent of graphic novels or street art with fluidity and emotional expressiveness. Amidst bright blocks of colors, her oil paintings depict moments of physical vulnerability and emotional connection between people of disparate races and generations.

Gormally’s paintings stem from documentation and elaboration. She creates iPad drawings from her photographs of her diverse community and the people she encounters while traveling, which become source material for her paintings.

Malayka Gormally's works are in public and private collections in Ireland, Germany, UK and across the United States.

Prominent contemporary art collectors have commissioned paintings by Gormally, including Presidents of the Boards of Trustees of the Seattle Art Museum and the Henry Art Gallery (Seattle), Music Director of the "Mostly Mozart Festival" (New York), Owner of the Seahawks NFL team franchise (Seattle), and the Chief Financial Officer, Microsoft (Redmond).

COMMISSION PORTRAIT PAINTINGS

Malayka Gormally has been creating distinctive contemporary oil portraits since 1996. She has worked with contemporary art collectors to create over one hundred contemporary portrait paintings on commission.

FILM

In addition to painting, Malayka Gormally has worked in film for several years, and that experience has influenced her painting style.

ART FILMS

With Tom Gormally she created short art films that won awards at the Rochester International Film Festival, New York (2005) and screened at Soil Gallery, Seattle (2005) and Local Sightings Film Festival at the Northwest Film Forum, Seattle (2006).

FEATURE FILMS

Malayka Gormally was an actor and assistant to the producer in “Zoo”, directed by Robinson Devor, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Directors Fortnight in Cannes, France (2007). "Zoo" was named of "The Best American Independent Films of the Decade" by FILMMAKER MAGAZINE.

Gormally was a co-executive producer of “The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle”, directed by David Russo, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Utah (2009).

ARTIST STATEMENT

Statement by the artist:

I've always been the one with a camera, documenting friends, family, relationships and community. I feel it’s important to create a visual record of people who mean something to each other. From my photographs I create iPad drawings, distilling the interesting moments of intimacy and tension in the interactions between people. The drawings become my image bank for my paintings, in which I create fictional narratives. In my paintings the intimacy, tension and strangeness of relationships are something that people see mirrored back to them, highlighting the importance of their lives and their loved ones.
