About Joumana Medlej

  • Biography
My art is a quest for what is universal and intemporal, what is unmoved by our small human affairs. I have expertise in Kufic, a now-forgotten Arabic script that is now cryptic even to native speakers, and I use it to create architectural compositions that carry the energy of the word. Currently I am very drawn to old cosmological models, which translate well in mandala-like compositions.
I'm not bound to a specific set of techniques, and am often trying new materials, but right now I favour cutting and layering paper, and I use laser-cut wood to achieve a similar effect in large wall sculptures. I use bright colours and different ways for them to interact with light.
