About Lora Radkova

  • Biography

Lora Radkova is an artist and photographer born in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria and her works are often inspired by many and different aspects in life and art. For her as a photographer is quite important and interesting to deal with a variety of artistic fields like fine art, cinema, literature and theatre, because constantly she draws inspiration for most of her photographic projects from there.

"For me as an artist is interesting and fascinating when visual images create a peculiar magic field around themselves and transfer it to the viewers – photographs can be the real expression of an unreal sensation. The most difficult part is to create and transfer this sensation, which surrounds you and which you see in your dreams. It is also important for me the pictures of a project to speak for themselves, to communicate with the viewer, to always tell a story, no matter if it is a beautiful fairytale or a dark story, full of bitter irony of our surrounding world. It is of great importance for me for a series of photos to have an idea, an intriguing story, and not to be simply empty visuals." - says Lora.

Therefore, she defended her Bachelor’s graduation diploma work in subject Photography at New Bulgarian University in 2011 with portfolio and thesis work, which explores the doctrine and the main bodywork of the famous psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung and his followers. During the period of her bachelor’s studies /2006-2011/ she had the desire as well as the opportunity to participate in several, but particularly different in their format and essence projects like competitions, exhibitions etc. Collective photographic exhibitions - "Dedicated to Love" in the former gallery NBU 2008 , “Student moments”  2008 and 2009 in NBU , "Young Creative Chevrolet" at  hotel 'Hilton' Sofia 2009 , "The places where we do /not/ live" at "International Photographic encounters" , Plovdiv 2010. Collective Art Competitions – 24-hours art festival for complete preparation and processing /live/ of the final AD frame for Mercedes GLK in Sofia 2008 , The Pan-European race "Young Creative Chevrolet" /section Photography at national level/ in Sofia 2009 and she has taken part as a director of photography and creative of short fiction film " Do we know each other ?" featuring at Sofia International Film Festival /SIFF 2010/, as well as a participation in a documentary about reggae and ragga culture in Bulgaria "Sofia-Kingston-Babylon", 2013. Because of her interest in cinema and literature during her bachelor study and couple of accomplished short scripts and movies, in 2013 she started a Master’s programme "Literature, Film and Visual Culture " at Sofia University “St. Climent Ochridski” and in 2015, she defended her master thesis with body of work and short film script “The ordinary life of Gabor”. During her master study, in 2014, Lora Radkova was selected to be a part of The Month of Photography 2014 and was invited to participate with her first solo photographic exhibition “Once upon a time…” at “1908 Gallery” in Sofia. In the same year she wrote her very first theatre screenplay “A portrait of a clinical case”, which took part in a competition of 199 Theatre in Sofia. Shortly after graduation, in 2016, one of Lora’s photographs was selected for the “XVIII National Annual Bulgarian Photography review” 2016 for the contest “Review of Bulgarian photography 2001-2015”. This year she has also accomplished her first full length documentary movie “Anna Nikolova-narrated story…” as a director of production, which was a project of Institute of Poland in Sofia. In October of 2016 Lora Radkova showed her second solo photographic exhibition “Fallen Angels” at The Art Foundation Gallery in Sofia.

    Event: "Fallen angels"

    Dates: 28 Oct 2016 - 13 Nov 2016

Venue: The Art Foundation, Sofia, Bulgaria

The idea of the series is much more associated with real people rather than with the common mental picture of these vague and mystical creatures, that is to say – the angels. My visualized hereto conception is coherent with the highly diverse and heterogeneous human fallibilities, natural frailties and subjections, considered as manifestation of spirit of compromise, passivity and moral decay. The contemporary state of mind of the people, however, enables a philosophical point of view – angels could represent the “free will”, along with people - the two sides of the symbiotic connection between God and Man. For me a man and an angel are in an eternal contest for superiority, represents rather the long-life struggle of every man and woman with his/ her self, with no final winner. The precise word to describe all of the “people-angels” is ‘resignation’. All of them perform some peculiar role of their own : exhausted, desperate, embittered, driven to madness, even to death ...

    Event: "Once upon a time"

    Dates: 11 Jun 2014 - 26 Jun 2014

    Venue: 1908 Gallery, Bulgaria, Sofia

The idea of the project "Once upon a time ..." came from the eternal fairy tale "The Snow Queen " of H. C. Andersen, which realisation has lead me to continue the project with some more fairy tales with interesting characters. The project was implemented jointly with the "National Museum of Natural History”-Sofia, which provided the place and the exhibits for the photos. This project aims to provide part of the museum’s exposure with kind of unusual and artistic view by recreating it in a fabulous and magic series. This series include in itself 3-5 photographs with variations on six popular children's fairy tales, in which one of the main characters – an animals - are some of the exhibits in the museum.
Therefore, the completed idea “Once upon a time...” became my first solo exhibition and it was chosen by tne photography organisation “Month of Photography-Sofia" 2014 in a special selection.
