About Kevin Butters

  • Biography
Much of my art is figurative, in particular focussing on life drawing and painting from the model. I also enjoy producing portraits. My preferred medium is pencil and watercolour, but on occasions I also use pen and ink, oils or pastels. I find that the subject matter often dictates the medium I will use. The figure paintings start with a pencil drawing. This allows corrections and adjustments to be made as I go along. At this stage, I am trying to get the proportions, shapes and angles as accurate as I can. The paint is then used to develop form and light and shade, as well as introducing colour. In watercolour figure painting I keep the colour palette very simple, using only four or five colours. Artists who have inspired my art range from old masters such as Raphael (particularly the drawings), and Rembrandt, to modern experts like Charles Reid
