About Katie Bell

  • Biography

Hello, my name is Katie Bell. I am an artist always wanting to create colourful and happy work.

I focus on taking commissions creating original pet portraits, in a fresh vibrant style that offers a modern alternative to classic watercolour, pastel and pencil works.

Distinct for its expressive marks and bold palette, my work has been steadily gaining popularity in the UK and abroad. Almost abstract in form, my graphical style of illustration is created digitally, then turned into high quality framed prints or canvases to greetings cards, coasters and mugs.

From an early age, I was never without colouring pencils or felt tips, and by the time I was in junior school, I knew I wanted to be a graphic artist. I studied art foundation then went on to study a BA (Hons) in graphic design.

I had a successful career as a designer in London, specialising in branding and typography with international brands such as Nokia, Sotheby's and Sky TV. Now, since becoming a mother, I work from home and have re-discovered my love of art, although my graphics background is still very evident in my illustrative style which I create digitally. Other inspiration comes from artists like Hockney and Hashim Akib, and their use of expressive mark making and colour.

The idea for my digital pet portraits started whilst in Park City, Utah when I was stuck for a new creative project. Flicking through Facebook, I spotted photos of some friends’ pets and as a pet lover myself, couldn’t resist having a go at illustrating them. I really enjoyed having fun with the images and so posted them back online. The amazing feedback I got from this spontaneous bit of creative fun spurred me on to make this my business direction.

As well as portrait commissions, I'm in love with circles and make this my focus as a way of un-winding. I find this is a path to me opening up from the graphic design and pet portraits that I work on. And my 'Circles' project is helping me flow naturally back into free painting on canvas. Gradually the more freeing and open I can be the better. I'm fascinated with overlays of colour, working with a limited palette and influences from organic shapes and spring flowers that I see in my garden. I wish there were more hours in the day to do it all.
