    Commissioned work begins

A favourite beach for so many people who live or visit Anglesey, North Wales is Porth Dafarch. This is the beginning of a Porth Dafarch commissioned acrylic painting on canvas.

    Putting detail in/on daffodil painting

After starting off blocking in colour, working with large brushes I sometimes move down to very fine brushes to put in eyelashes or small fine lines. Completion is close at this stage.

    Painting a commission whilst travelling

During my recent sabbatical back to my homeland of Wales to participate in Open Studios and exhibitions I accepted and painted commissions. Here I am in a friends kitchen working on an acrylic painting of the Welsh beach Aberffraw. Painting once completed was packaged, posted and arrived safely to its new owners. Who 'love it!"

    Painting a mural

Here I am starting to paint a broadband provider in New Zealands' 'box' with a mural. Designs were submitted by artists to a local council for them to choose their preferred designs and then if chosen (I was for two pieces) the artist went out, prepared the surface and began painting mural. This is me starting one of the two in 2013 in Upper Hutt, Wellington

How I work - work in progress

How I work - work in progress

Over days to weeks the painting continues to emerge with my layering technique. I frequently work with glazing liquid as well as acrylic paint. The series of flower paintings I am working on at the moment sees magenta, yellow, pink, orange and turquoise as my main stay of colours with the use of white and a dark blue to tint and darken the values of colour pigments. I work on more than one piece at the same time. This enables me to step back from some pieces and see whether they are going in the right direction or not! Whilst avoiding huge angst and applying myself to problem solve a completely different issue like the size of a chimpanzees nose as opposed to petal form.

I start by applying large swatches of colour to the background. Then the layering begins. I do not 'draw' the image, instead I work directly with fairly large brushes and block in areas and layer, often working from photographs and looking to re create the light and dark hues - in my colour schemes.
