Joost Verhagen (1958-2013) is characterized as a virtuoso painter with a very specific personal style that inspires many. By viewing his work, one becomes acquainted with a fascinating inner world and the joy that went into the practice. The art of Joost Verhagen communicates. It is frozen energy that radiates, hopefully to the enjoyment of those who look upon the work.
In the past Joost painted landscapes and big abstracted canvases that are build up with powerful brushstrokes. Throughout the years the abstractions started transforming into more figurative elements. The more recent works are figurative, but not in the classical sense of the word. The painting of space - preferably empty space - was Joost his big challenge. An almost impossible task. Empty space is filled with potency, feelings, impressions, and ideas... He has managed to translate that on to canvas in a most amazing way.
This is shown vividly in his series of paintings 'Reformed Light', inspired by incoming light in 'de Hooglandse Kerk' in Leiden. The layering, power and energy of these paintings are a testament to his expertise. His work can and will move, and will reveal certain mysteries. The experience of a work of art is different for everyone; everybody will look through their own eyes and relate his of her feelings to their experiences. Not only for the viewer, but also for Joost himself, his paintings could look different everyday, and reveal a different meaning.
Joost Verhagen graduated from the Royal Academic of Fine Arts in The Hague in 1984. After his graduation he was quickly successful. The Ministry of Transport and Water Management bought works of his, he exhibited at prominent galleries including 'Nouvelles Images', 'Orez Mobil', 'Liesbeth Lips', 'Pulchri Studio's' and 'Qua Art/ Qua Science'. Besides working at his atelier he has always taught painting; with much pleasure, and love for the profession, he taught many students. Throughout the years he started getting more and more recognition as a painter. His painting 'Arnhem' got him the 'ArtiBrak Galerieprijs' in 2012.
