"Art has the mysterious ability to act like a mirror to the soul." They are my own words straight out of the journal of brush miles and a search for identity - a journey that is truly one of self discovery. I am looking for a connection - something about the artwork that resonates on the inside. My philosophy, "It's not trying to be someone - it's finding out who I already am - who I was created to be. And the art is the development of that unique expression."
The watercolour medium can be so minimalist in its expression and yet so profound. The draw is in the uncertainty with all its possibilities. I don't want to know what the finished artwork will look like. I need the mystical quality where the artwork seems to paint itself, and then I see it and I connect. Doesn't always work like that of course, but I have to stay away from anything contrived to risk and experiment and just be.
Monochromes resonate with me deeply. The cool greys lay the foundation for my paintings which convey a refined quality, whilst the reds and blues prominent in my work provide a contemporary context. I find that the use of cool greys against the colour maximises the intended statements of both. My style combines some detail with more impressionist brushwork that compliment the chosen themes. The result is a stylish portrayal of the tangible modern world of urbanscapes, cars, and people.
