About Jo Ellis

  • Biography

I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United Kingdom in 1970. I have been travelling around the world ever since, painting and exhibiting, while living in New Zealand, Sudan, Tanzania, Pakistan, South Korea, Egypt and Bosnia & Herzegovina. I am now living in London with my family.

I studied traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy in Hong Kong which I developed further during four years in Korea. I also studied fine art and design in London. As an illustrator and painter I like drawing in traditional Chinese ink which I grind from an inkstick on stone to create the right degree of thickness and shade. I also love painting with acrylic on canvas or recycled cardboard to create texture. Mixing both eastern and western techniques and styles often results in unusual interpretation of familiar subject matter.

I have held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Cairo, Alexandria, Sarajevo, Florida , New York and group exhibitions in London at The Mall Gallery, Alexander  Llewellyn Gallery, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Banqueting House, Orleans House Gallery, The Stable Gallery, Riverside Gallery, Richmond Town Hall, Kingston Museum, The Fountain Gallery, Landmark Arts Centre and The Lightbox Gallery.  I took part in Channel 4 TV programme Watercolour Challenge and reached semi final.
