About Julia Filament

  • Biography

Julia Filament (1994) was born in Ukraine, currently lives and works in Rotterdam.

She has 7 years of basic fine art school education and 3 years of fine art and design education in "Kiev Institute of Art and Design".

Julia came to the Netherlands in 2013, she started her own business here. Currently she works in her art studio in "De Fabriek" (a creative collective in Overschie) and is a member of the “CBK Rotterdam & Art Office".

Her early works (2009-2012) are characterised by partly abstract, partly human-like creatures, blending with organic figures and natural elements.

Later (2013-2015) she uses mostly no colour, and creates black and white ink illustrations. This collection of dark art is based on the deep inner research she goes through while finding herself in different country, different society, isolated from community also by being not able to speak neither English, neither Dutch that time.

From 2015 on, her work shows her interest in psychology, sociology and philosophy (which is the biggest source of inspiration for her), sometimes coloured by her own experiences. The relationship between people and their miscommunication in many ways becomes a subject for research.

At this moment Julia is still busy exploring human being as a part of society, as she says:

“I narrate the odes about human life through my works of art. It is always about people and role of a person in society, self-exploration and the experience of the confrontation with the world.”
