About Jemal Gugunava

  • Biography
Jemal is a full-time professional artist.

Spreading his time between UK, Prague and Georgia,
he paints everything that catches his eye and imagination from landscapes, places, streets, still life, people, portraits to female forms. This variety of subjects is an influence of his academical education which he combines with contemporary vision.

During his artistic career Jemal has exhibited his work around the globe. His works are in the public museums in Georgia, Armenia and Russia and many private collections throughout the world. Jemal participates in the art auctions and donates his paintings to the different charities. In January 2017 he donated his postcard size painting to the “Postcard from the Edge” Visual AIDS benefits show in New York (Gallery Metro Pictures) where it was sold to NY collector.

Jemal's art reflects his mood and a spontaneous outpouring of emotions. His style is intriguing and captivating.  Portraits in particular possess a strong, penetrating gaze, fully engaging the viewer and reaching the depths of the soul.  Although Jemal's philosophy of life is harmony, purity, deep reflection, beauty, contemplation, reserve and simplicity of existence, he tends to exaggerate and dramatize rather than simply describe. He forces a viewer to concentrate his or her attention on the main object, not being distracted by small details and long descriptions.

Jemal often applies thick paint straight onto the painting surface using so called 'impasto' technique that compliments painting wet-on-wet or alla prima, which means 'in one go'. Using a palette knife and brushes Jemal creates thickly textured paintings that are rich in colour and depth.

Please contact the artist if you like his style and would like to commission a portrait or any other painting.
