About Jeff Stephens

  • Biography

I have studied art beginning as a young child, mostly drawing and colored pencils beside my father who is an architect and exceptional illustrator.  For as long as I can remember I have drawn, painted, or worked in photography enjoying the visual images and color that nature produces.  Though my working career took me in another direction I have always continued to work artistically developing my skills through painting and photography.

    Influence:

As an undergrad at the University of Southern Mississippi I began to study the work of Marc Rothko, and Joseph Albers in the use of color and perception.  From that time I have continued to the format of large color fields in oil on canvas as my primary medium though I do like to work in watercolor utilizing the same format.

My work process begins with the colors of nature and from there I develop a concept and palate to paint from and thus building an image that is intended to produce an emotional response from the viewer.

I also love Fine Art Photography generally in Black and White. I began studying photography in the 9th grade on a field trip to Washing DC after receiving my first camera for Christmas. My primary focus is landscape, trees and the beach.
