About Jane Upstone

  • Biography
Painting and drawing is my way of exploring the world around me. I'm interested in creating a mood or atmosphere in the work rather than a direct copy of an image or scene. My work ranges from abstract to figurative, and although the finished piece often ends up a long way away from its starting point, landscape plays an important part in the journey. I am fascinated by paint, alternating between using thick impasto layers and thin translucent glazes, constantly experimenting with the way I use paint to create a rich variety of surface textures. I definitely love to work BIG, although this can be problematic when competing for space on gallery walls! I am originally from Hertfordshire, and having lived in various locations across the UK I have now returned to a near neighbour of my starting point and live and work in Bedfordshire. My first career was as a graphic designer, then after raising a young family I returned to university to change course and follow my first love of fine art by completing a degree in Contemporary Fine Art at Reading University in 2003. I then went on to work as an art teacher before becoming a full time painter. Although my work is represented in a variety of different professional galleries and collectives where I take part in both solo and group shows, I would like to increase my online presence and be able to access a wider art loving audience. I currently use both my website and instagram to show work online, and I think that Artfinder would be an excellent vehicle to compliment both of these and help me to reach a wider market. On a less serious note - Probably more of a dog person, although I have a cat that chose me rather than me choosing her! (found her in the woods and then went on to house her and 5 kittens that she popped out shortly after bringing her home!). I think that just makes me a sucker! Too many stupid things to mention - but a memorable one was drawing a big smiley face in the butter belonging to my OCD boss. My mayhem would be to be Housing minister for a day and grant all homeless people a house. Tea first! Sadly no alien language inventions though.
