About Jane Tomlinson

  • Biography
I make paintings of wonderful things from the world around us: animals, birds, landscapes, stones and sometimes even whole continents. I use careful drawing and lively colours to express the truth and beauty revealed by nature.

My 'default' medium is splashing with watercolour, but I love acrylics and getting dirty and incisive with the drypoint printmaking technique, too. Oh, and I also draw and paint quirky maps by hand.

I am fascinated by nature, history and science and it's usually a combination of these that drives my work. Good drawing is important to me so it's no surprise that I especially admire van Gogh, Gauguin, Hockney, Matisse, and 17th century Dutch and Flemish artists.

I am a keen traveller, and what I observe on my forays further afield frequently inspires my work. But there is plenty of inspiration right here in rural west Oxfordshire too. To say nothing of all those ideas lurking in my brain!

"Jane has, over the years, produced a body of the most life-affirming, colourful and magical contemporary art around. Scenes and depictions of subjects, mostly drawn from the natural world of which she is such a fan, occupy a beguiling hinterland between realism and the magical and as such, bestride detailed observation and whimsical imagination with delightful results." - Russell, Manchester
