About Hideyuki Sobue

  • Biography
A Japanese artist Hideyuki Sobue, who lives and works in the Lake District, UK, graduated from Osaka University of Arts, Japan (awarded scholarship). His art practice is focused on painting and drawing, exploring how to derive the maximum technical and conceptual potential from those practices.

Over the past 10+ years, Sobue has developed his original new brush hatching technique, using Japanese sumi ink and acrylic, which was inspired by the concept of disegno established in the Florentine Renaissance, based on drawing, combined with the ongoing study of neurology on a variety of themes. His aim is to create a platform bridging East and West, and our heritage and contemporary understanding, by means of drawing and painting through delving into the core meaning of human act of seeing.

    Event: Sanpo

    Dates: Sept. 10, 2018 - Nov. 4, 2018

Venue: Dover Gallery, Farfield Mill Art Craft & Heritage Centre, Sedbergh, Cumbria

The Japanese term “sanpo” means walk, stroll, ramble, and wander. It is not a walk for the walk’s sake, but for the sake of spiritual health, as it were, meditative act in our daily life. In his wander Wordsworth immortalized the experience of an encounter with a daffodil field in his poem “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”. The lover of nature, Beethoven made a point of taking a walk in the woods every day for his musical inspiration. It is during “sanpo” that Sobue often encounters stunning scenes in light and shade, finds beautiful objects he never noticed before, and has some flash of inspiration for creativity. For this exhibition, Sobue explores the essence of his personal experience in “sanpo” by assembling the fragment of images of which he was inspired, through which he pondered the existential meaning along the lines of art history. This is a series of his visual monologue that Sobue has explored in his artistic everyday life ever since he settled in the Lake District.

This project was held as the art collaboration with a contemporary poet Gary Boswell and a young cellist Yoshika Masuda held in 2005 at Rydal Mount, where the Poet Laureate William Wordsworth once lived for nearly 40 years. Through this project I explored the potential communication with the great poet past who loved the Lake District where I started to live with my family. As is well known, Wordsworth was a poet who so loved the Lakeland as to try to stem the torrent of modernisation. I assembled a series of works in attempting to trace Wordsworth’s visual fragmentary memories, deep emotion in his dairy life through the inspiration by the beauty of the Lakeland.
