About Henry Maber

  • Biography
My work is concerned with depicting landscape in an expressionist style. It attempts to convey a sense of place, atmosphere and light particular to that moment through the use of colour. The subjects I depict are landscapes that have both an element of both urban environments as well as natural forms. They will often contain residual traces of human interaction with the space or will contain objects that stand in lieu of a human presence. The subjects of my paintings tend to be ordinary scenes culled from photographs of everyday experience that are refigured through the manner in which they are represented in paint and through the distortion inherent in the photographic and paint media. As a result the paintings often have a tension between a formalistic interest in the material quality of the paint on the flat surface and a realistic depiction of space.
