About Helen Shepherd

  • Biography
The magic of nature drives my passion to paint. People liken my landscapes to fairy dells- I guess I've never gotten over my childhood love for secret places and rainbows. My favourite books and dreams as a child were filled with magic and secret gardens. My paintings are reimaginings of photos I take on walks in deep woodland either in early morning or dusk when the pure light illuminates the landscape.

My abstract work is more meditative. The paintings begin as freehand doodles which take on a life of their own while I listen to music in my garden studio. They can end up looking like cities, space, maps or sea or pure abstract forms but they're never planned. They really do seem to paint themselves.
