About Hannah Charlotte Read

  • Biography
Welcome. My name is Hannah, I am a visual Artist living in Dorset, UK.

Envisage a dear stood listening silently in the woods; alert, vulnerable, in the moment and in tune with place and self. This is the place I go to, to create.

I find freedom in silence, I find freedom in being able to tell stories of worlds within worlds that are present but rarely seen.

My mission is to strengthen the connection between people and place.

This idea of place and the recapturing of peoples imagination to the wonder in the world is summed up perfectly in this quote by Richard Dawkins (Evolutionary Biologist)

“There is an anaesthetic of familiarity, a sedative of ordinariness, which dulls the senses and hides the wonder of existence…But we can recapture that sense of having just entered in on a life by looking at our own world in unfamiliar ways”

My work aims to take my audience on a journey into themselves whilst also going into the wilds of the world.

I believe in the interconnectedness of all things and I wish to honour the lessons that lie within.

I often look to the animal world to reflect our human experience as I honour the power that is held within the eyes of a fellow creature of the earth. It is my understanding that through healing our connections, telling our stories and looking in new ways we can start to reconnect and heal ourselves and the planet.

I am inspired by the work of Salvador Dali, Grayson Perry, Mark Ryden, David Stoupakis, Elizabeth McGrath, Marcus Coates and Marvin Gaye Chetwynd to name a few.

I find inspiration in work that unpicks idea's of social norms. Work that elicits magic and humour whilst also posing questions about deeper philosophical questions that are surfacing today, in an age of changing spiritual consciousness and accelerating social change.

I also take inspiration from Shamanism and Numerology as this guides me to keep creating from the heart by following my natural flow in order to create work with meaning, soul and purpose.

    Dates: Dec. 9, 2017 - Dec. 9, 2017

Venue: Bulbarrow Timber Yard, Bulbarrow, Dorset

A solo exhibition and silent auction of work.

I wanted to conjure up soothing, healing feelings, to evoke ideas, teachings and stories from mother earth, letting the audience slow down and breathe with the rhythm of the universe.

I displayed a selection of works that took the audience on trip through the ancient wonders and teachings of the world. Creating a wondrous walking story board exhibition. Along the way the wisdom of the creatures that inhabit earth with us, spoke to the audience of their intuitive knowing and understanding to help guide our path forwards.

I created an interactive exhibition of my paintings within a native AmericanTeepee in Blandford town centre for the Free Expression Arts Festival.
The content of my work was about the power of narrative and story in opening up idea's of the present.
My aim was to not only display my work but to show it in a way that was interactive and was an opportunity for my audience to share a story of their own if they wanted to.
Within the Teepee structure; my paintings were displayed on the inner walls and in the centre was a sculpture that I made called 'BINMAN', he was a Shaman character that I created for my audience to tell their stories to. Held within his mouth was a camera that was on record for the duration so that I had a number of new story that were created from the whole experience.
