About Han Liu

Han Liu’s abstract landscape paintings are expressionist and bold. They may remind you of Joan Mitchell’s abstract compositions, as they draw the line between abstraction and landscape representation. Although the canvases are alive, full, bursting, and dripping, they seem to be suspended or frozen in their action. Are the landscape arrangements coming together or falling apart? The many layers of wild brushstrokes create a lot of depth, and provide a three-dimensional feeling to the work. Han sometimes finds his initial inspiration in a photograph. It might be the color of a landscape, or the shape of a shadow, and then his imagination will take it from there.
