About Erika Farkas

  • Biography

I am a self-taught visual artist born in Transylvania, Romania, and living in Ottawa, Canada since the late 1980s. Although  I never had any formal art training, artistic creativity has always been a big part of my life. I started exhibiting my figurative pencil drawings in 2013, and I have won several awards with them in juried local and international art exhibitions in Ottawa and online. Later, I took interest in pastels and mixed media, creating a series or realistic wildlife, figurative, floral, and still life paintings.

Creating art has become one of the biggest joys of my life. I thrive on that feeling of urgency and excitement that I get when the creative juices start flowing through my brain and urge me to pick up a pencil, a brush or a pastel stick, and just have fun with it.

After working with graphite and charcoal pencils for some years, I was thrilled to discover the colourful and exciting world of pastels. Through the brightness and intensity of soft pastel pigments, I was able to achieve a much more sophisticated rendering of my subjects. With this incredible medium, my paintings can be as colourful as life itself. I am looking forward to paint many more wildlife, still lives, landscapes, and portraits with soft pastels and pastel pencils.

I am an active member of several art organization in Ottawa, and I exhibit throughout the year in various shows and other local and online events.  My sold and commissioned works can be found in private collections in North America and Europe.
