About Emerald Dunne

  • Biography
The quotation on my page isn't an artist or a wise observation of my own. I have chosen it as it chimes with my practice and love of yoga which not only keep me fit and healthy, but helps feed my brain and stimulate my creativity. Many of my newer works are inspired by the chakras, circular 'power points' throughout the physical body that correspond to various emotions and stimuluses. Ironically, I am unable to do any but the gentlest yoga right now as I recently sustained a broken clavicle while out cycling. The recovery process has highlighted how important physical health is and how we so often take it for granted.

My work touches on Buddhist themes of reincarnation and impermanence and is partly inspired by living near Koyasan, a major centre of Buddhist practice and belief in Japan. It features circles, the default shape of the universe. Electrons revolve around neutrons as stars spin around star systems. Life could also be described as circular. We often come back to the same points time and time again, hopefully with more knowledge and experience.

I love colour and was keen to capture what I saw when living in Japan: the bright blue of a metallic mobile phone, the red and gold of a kimono. I incorporate Japanese kanji (writing), vibrant Japanese chiyogami paper, egg shells and gold leaf to augment my paintings. Additionally, I bring aspects of my own Celtic culture into my work such as lettering. Gold was a familiar player in ancient Celtic arts and crafts as was the circle, chiming as it does and did with the seasons and concept of life renewing itself.

I also paint seascapes, employing as much colour as I do in my abstracts. I depict North Berwick beach near Edinburgh in Scotland, a place close to my heart as it's where I spent my formative years. The Bass Rock stars in most of these paintings and is my touchstone. I can always count on 'him' to be there when I go back. North Berwick beach always revitalises and inspires me.

As a thank you for purchasing one of my works, I will include a hand-made card. Thank you for looking.

PS - I'm in the process of updating my shipping tables, so only prices of deliveries within the UK are indicated at present. Feel free to email me for shipping prices if you're outwith the UK and I can give you an individual quote.
