About Donna Brewins-Cook

  • Biography

Born Donna Cook, I have lived in Yorkshire all my life.  Northern light is important to the paintings and I enjoy the challenge of depicting the constant flux state of a landscape. Walking is central to any new work, I walk around a particular area to get a feel for the place, sketching in charcoals, pencils, acrylics and taking photographs.  I then merge the sketches with a remembered memory and feeling of the place, using these experiences back at the studio.

I prefer my work to create its own presence. I hope my paintings say something about changing environments and personal space, the images we look at and the atmosphere which envelops them, changes as does our experience of visualising and absorbing images over time.

I have had a number of private and public commissions, most notably a painting featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs TV programme (Sept 2013), producing a large scale oil painting for the interior of the York House episode.

Research and Development Fund from Yorkshire Arts (now The Arts Council)

I was awarded Research and Development funding from Yorkshire Arts to develop a project based around the theme: 'Marks of Generations'.

This project took me to various locations in the UK, including Hardwick Old Hall in Derbyshire. I looked at the physical marks and layers of history on the walls of buildings, to assess human impact on buildings and places.
The project produced a number of research sketchbooks and a big abstract oil painting entitled 'Marks of Generations' (artist collection).
This theme is one I plan to re-visit in the near future.
