Biography
Dimitar Chonov introduces intelligent, relaxed and well balanced dynamics in the realm of contemporary sculpture. He follows the example of the exquisite classical lines of the Greek and Roman structure of the human body, which being transformed in different ways, is his main topic. A historical focus of many of his works speaks for the author’s need to know, to understand and to feel the ancestral ties with the past. The craftsmanship of the hand is accompanied and encouraged by the various influences of the artistic thought, emotion and passion to be found for every idea the respective form. The author is recognizable with original stylization and obvious symbolism of his compositions. The ideal and the beauty are on the front line.
Dimitar Chonov creates paragons of classical male beauty. Athletes and warriors – his characters come from those times when the magnificence of the human body was a cult, times of personal heroism and dignity. Together with the battles and scenes of heroism, the sculptor also glorifies women, as though aiming to close the parable-like life circle of his characters. He is loving and mild when working with the female body. The harmonious proportions lead to a subtle and delicate eroticism.
Statics postures are almost absent in his art. Many of his works carry the feeling of wind, of the upcoming or already begun movement. This enhances the viewer’s curiosity for the next sculptural frame.
